Artist’s Statement
As an artist I am most intrigued by light, form, contrast and texture. I am inspired by the simple elegance of flowers. It fascinates me that a flower can be just as beautiful and complex in peak bloom as when it is in the throws of decay. In fact, many times more so. I am drawn to contrasts in color and tonality, but also texture and even subtext. Much of my work explores the juxtaposition of silky, flawless petals layered with gritty textures. Both hold a certain beauty for different reasons. Yet when combined, they open up a whole new world of visual stimuli.
I strive to show the beauty in the mundane, and I use the camera to help us see these subjects in a new or different light. Techniques like infra red photography and high dynamic range photography show us a glimpse of the beautiful, but otherwise invisible world that surrounds us everyday. These techniques open up a whole new world of color, texture, and contrast.
I was trained in the traditional photographic processes, using film and light and chemistry to produce my images. I enjoyed this work tremendously but have come to realize that working in the digital realm has allowed me to explore a visual style that was otherwise very elusive. I am fascinated with technology and its ability to enhance my self expression.
