• Tamales, Wontons and Cookies

Christmas Eve 2008, originally uploaded by Joseph Orsillo.

This Christmas was especially pleasant. It started off a little daunting with the news that both sides of my family were celebrating on Christmas Eve. In years past these were usually split between the Eve and the Day, but not this year. That meant all of the cooking and wrapping had to be done especially early. Luckily, my world famous chocolate chip cookies were baked the night before, although one batch was ruined due to spoiled nuts. If it were not for my selflessly making nut less cookies for the niece, the whole lot would have been toast. That still meant cream cheese wontons and green chile tamales had to be dealt before we left the house at 1:30 in the afternoon. I had made the wontons earlier that week so I was not so concerned with them turning out well, just the time involved with their preparation. The tamales on the other hand, were a venture into uncharted territory. I had found the recipe for the very tasty green chile tamale served at El Chollo in Pasadena. Michelle and I had them a few years ago but have not been back since. The recipe seemed easy enough, but I was dealing with all kinds of conversion issues; pounds to cups, whole ears of corn to cups of canned corn. Then we had to deal with the whole business of wrapping them up in corn husks and parchment paper. I think Michelle had seen her mom and sister do this before, but it really was a new experience for both of us. All in all, everything was done on time and tasted quite good. The wontons were a big hit at the in-laws’ and the tamales were a smash at my sister’s (a first for my Argentine/Italian family). All in all it turned out to be a very nice Christmas Eve, and the best part was Michelle and I got to spend Christmas day alone together at home.

You can see a slide show of the whole evening here, but beware, I was very snap happy that night…

Update: Sorry if anyone clicked on a link in this post and got redirected to something malicious. I’m not sure whats up with that, but I know there’s been something screwie with my site for a while now. If anyone is still interested in seeing the Christmas Eve shots I would suggest you copy the address below and paste it into your browser…

Hey people. I know its been a while, but I’m asking you to throw me a bone.  Please vote for my image on Photrade, and check out the site while you’re there.  Photrade seems like a viable alternative to flickr (just in case you were looking for one).  Its in closed beta now, but I can set you up with an invite if you would like one.

    I heart Seatle

Once More, originally uploaded by Joseph Orsillo.

My time in Seattle came to an end nearly three weeks ago but I still can’t get her off of my mind. I will have to make my way there again soon, if not for good, then at least for a visit. In the mean time I spent a few, uneventful days in St. Louis Missouri. I was there for a work pow wow(?) and didn’t get to see anything except the inside of a hotel and a conference room. I didn’t even take a camera with me, but I did get to see two F-18 fighter jets scream past my hotel window. Worth the price of admission.

This summer also saw my acceptance into the PADA group that meets out of the PV Art Center. My first meeting is this next week and I am a little nervous. I was really hoping this would lead to a group show, but as it turns out there wont be another one until 2009. In the mean time I get to meet and mingle with all of these new people, and we all know how I feel about people, right? (I hate them…)

And finally, I will be off to Las Vegas for another installment of Photoshop World. This has become my yearly summer vacation adn I just can’t wait to get there. Its not Vegas so much as hanging with a bunch of Photoshop nerds that makes me happy. Plus there’s always the chance of prizes, from the famous Dr. Brown giveaways, to the after show festivities and of course the Guru Awards. I entered three images in the photography category but still haven’t heard if any were nominated. Keep your fingers crossed for me and let see if I can repeat.

    Furry Trees

On my way to Mt.St. Helens last weekend I came across a thicket of trees that were covered in the furry moss. It was creepy and beautiful, and when the light was just right, it seemed to make the trees glow.

    The Emerald State

under the bridge, originally uploaded by Joseph Orsillo.

Work has WISELY decided to send me to Washington for the better part of a month. Honestly, I think folks at work were beginning to realize that if I stayed in the office for much longer it would not be pleasant, for anyone. Call me spoiled. I guess all this travel has made me understand that there is life outside of Los Angeles. From what I have seen so far I think I will really like Seattle. There are so many trees. I mean, this IS a metropolitan city, right? This is the center for commercial aviation. They build jumbo jets here, not to mention bloated operating systems, yet it feels like pockets of civilization just sprung up in the middle of the forest. Seriously, trees and trees and trees and more trees, but not one palm… Weird.

The real reason for this is to announce the new Print Store on my site. 24 images are available for purchase through Image Kind and if you don’t see the image you want feel free to Contact Me. Let me tell you, I have had several prints made by these folks and the quality is on par with anything I have seen to date - really nice work, and ordering is fast and painless. Lets Try This Again…

    By jorsillo | July 1, 2008

, originally uploaded by Joseph Orsillo.Well, there have been some major issues with the site lately . Lets just say, I am beginning to really think technology is working against me. I think I may have lost some (most, all) of my blog posts in the process, but no one ever looked at those anyways, right?Don’t worry, you haven’t missed much. I haven’t made a new image since my time in Santa Fe. I think that place sucked the life out of me. That, or I’ve just been too lazy and uninspired to create. In a way, the down time has been nice.Things should be back to normal soon, but I make no guarantees. The rest of the week looks sketchy at best, but next week brings travel to the great northwest. If all goes well I will have countless hours to get this thing back in working order. In the mean time, enjoy
